SCOC - Officials Course Information

Introductory Officiating General Principles
Duration : 6 hours – offered at ORS as 3 separate 2 hour modules, detailed as follows:
Module 1: Self Management
At the completion of this module, the official will be able to display professionalism, integrity and ethical conduct in their role as an official, prepare for the requirements of officiating, and review their own performance after a competition.
The course covers the following topics:
- your career path
- goal setting
- personal development
- self reflection
- decision making
- psychological recovery skills
Module 2: Managing Competition
At the completion of this module, the official will be able to manage the risks of officiating in competition, and abide by the legal responsibilities expected of an official

- accusations
- assaults
- negligence
- defamation
- taking action
- tribunals
- mediation
- contracts
- employment contracts
- administration
Module 3: People Management
At the completion of this module, the official will be able to use a range of communication strategies to develop effective relationships, minimise conflict, and deal with disputes effectively.
The course covers the following topics:
- improving communication
- mentoring
- preventative approaches to conflict
- dealing with conflict
- leadership
ONLINE - Introductory Officiating General Principles
The course contains the three modules above, which cover a range of general officiating topics, including ethical responsibilities of officials, preparation for officiating, safety, communication, dealing with conflict and people management. The course takes approximately four hours to complete, and there is assessment included within the course. Officials have six months to complete the course after they register. Advanced Officiating General Principles
Duration: 6 hours – offered at ORS as 3 separate 2 hour modules, detailed below
Module 1: Advanced Self Management
At the completion of this module, the official will be able to continually improve their own officiating skills including the mental skill requirements.
The course covers:
- The career pathway within your sport
- Developing a professional development plan in order to further your knowledge, skills and attitudes
- Where to find assistance to develop your skills
- Establishing on-going liaison with other officials/coaches or advisors
- Utilising technology to analyse performance
- Developing, implementing and monitoring a personal self-reflection program
- Assessing mental readiness
- Tools to help control / modify mental readiness
- Developing, implementing and monitoring a personal mental preparation plan
Module 2: Advanced Managing the Competition Environment
At the completion of this module, the official will be able to carry out administrative, reporting and tribunal requirements as well as plan the risks of officiating in competition
Module 3: Advanced People Management
At the completion of this module, the official will be able to work with a wide range of people to enhance on and off field relationships as well as utilizing leadership and negotiation skills
Mentor Training
Duration: 7.5 hrs
The Australian Sports Commission Mentor Training Program is a one day workshop that aims to develop and enhance the skills of mentors working with coaches and officials in community through to high performance environments.
The program covers the interpersonal skills required for mentors and the planning and processes of mentoring. The program contains a number of practical activities to practice mentoring skills. On completion of the workshop, mentors should be able to plan and organise the mentoring relationship and assist mentees to develop and improve.
Play By The Rules (PBTR)
PBTR is a website that provides information, interactive scenarios and free online training for coaches officials, administrators and players. It aims to assist sport and recreation organisations provide inclusive, safe and fair environments.
