be active PlayTime is a physical activity/physical play program for children aged 0-5 years developed by the Office for Recreation and Sport and co-funded by the ORS and the Department of Health.
be active PlayTime is a play-based program because it is widely believed that much of children’s early learning occurs through play. Although children have different learning styles, most love to play. This program utilises the child’s innate desire to play and it offers plenty of ideas that will help children acquire crucial fundamental movement skills.
The program directly targets parents and carers of children aged 0-5 years and provides an opportunity to deliver activities in a range of environments i.e. playgroups, community events, community centres, kindergartens, childcare centres, etc.
The be active PlayTime program seeks to:
- Educate parents and carers on the benefits of being physically active from an early age
- Equip parents and carers with the confidence and knowledge needed to facilitate physical play in the home setting
- Demonstrate physical play and physical activities parents and carers can do with their children from an early age
- Demonstrate inexpensive and everyday home resources that can be used as equipment to enhance activities and play
be active PlayTime activities have been designed to use both homemade and purchased play equipment, but there are many activities where no equipment is necessary; children and adults can use their own bodies.
be active PlayTime was implemented as a pilot in February 2006 and in the past two years it has been delivered across South Australia by 33 contracted organisations.
