Volunteers - Overview

The Office for Recreation and Sport (ORS), through the State Coaching and Officiating Centre, provides a range of information regarding volunteers and volunteer management.

Volunteers are essential in the sport and recreation industry. Volunteers currently carry out almost 80% of all sport and recreation administration. Without the efforts of volunteers many of the opportunities we currently have to participate and be active in sport and recreation would disappear.

A study prepared in 2003 by the Australian Bureau of Statistics illustrates just how much we depend on volunteers in Australia.

In 2000:

  • Over 1 million people undertook voluntary work in sport organisations
  • 130 million hours of work by volunteers in 2000 was conducted in sport and recreation
  • 70,000 people would have to have been employed full-time to cover the time contributed by volunteers in sport
  • The value of the work carried out by sport volunteers is estimated at $1.5 billion annually
  • South Australia leads the nation with our rate for volunteers in sport being 2.4% higher than the Australian average.
