Specific Population Groups - Overview

The Office for Recreation and Sport is committed to ensuring that all people, regardless of age, gender, cultural background and ability have equal access to sport and recreation opportunities.

The Office employs officers to provide a focus in the areas of sport and recreation for Indigenous Australians, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, women and girls, mature age and people with a disability. These officers work with relevant key partners to develop strategic directions and programs and are also available to assist sport and recreation organisations develop targeted programs.

The development of new programs and services for many specific population groups, however, often requires both mainstream physical activity, recreation and sport providers and community organisations to provide education and training opportunities for their staff and members.

Training workshops and seminars are therefore provided to provide information and training in areas such as cultural issues, barriers to participation, strategies to involve new participants, modifying generic activities and modifying coaching methods for different abilities.
