D-Net
D-Nets primary role is to ensure that those employed in the industry by State sport and recreation organisations as State Development Officers have access to the latest information. Further information is available in the Association section of this website.

2007 Facility Managers Workshop

The Office for Recreation and Sport (ORS) held the 2007 Facility Managers Workshop on Tuesday 27th March at the Golden Grove Recreation Centre. The workshop was attended by Recreation, Leisure and Aquatic Facility Managers, Programmers and Staff from all over South Australia and consisted of presentations addressing a range of topical issues as highlighted below:

Session 1 – Industry Overview – Ken Phillips

Ken Phillips, Manager of Cultural and Leisure Services at Victoria’s Brimbank City Council and former President of the UK Institute of Sport and Recreation Management gave an overview of his experience in both the UK and Australian Sport and Recreation Industry and addressed key differences in attitudes, programs, structures as well as addressing future needs and opportunities within the Australian market. Session 2 – Facility Maintenance – Frank Parrello

Frank Parrello is a Senior Services Engineer Advisor for the Building Maintenance Division of the Department for Transport, Energy and Infrastructure. Franks presentation looked at the relevant legal requirements, acts and available resources to assist those involved with the management of Recreation, Leisure and Aquatic Facilities to fully understand their legal responsibilities.

Frank spoke about the use of Technical Data Sheets to monitor the maintenance requirements of a range of specific building components and equipment. These data sheets are available from the following link:

Session 3 – Conflict Resolution – Mary Duncan and Jan Sutherland

Conflict Resolution is always a topical issue within Recreation and Leisure Centres. Mary Duncan, National Project Officer for Play by the Rules and Jan Sutherland, CEO of Sport SA, delivered an interactive session looking at the range of conflict issues that arise, why they arise, how centres are currently dealing with conflict, what works well and what doesn’t and the support and information avenues available for Recreation and Leisure Centres to assist with handling conflict.  Click here for Presentation (577kb)

Session 4 – Creating Child Safe Environments – It really does matter – Jan Stirling

Jan Stirling, Safe Supportive Environments Officer at the Office for Recreation and Sport gave an update on the implications of the Child Protection Act Amendment 2005, looking at the progress made over the last 12 months in regards to understanding how this will effect the Sport and Recreation Industry and the responsibilities, requirements, support and resources available for Recreation and Leisure Centres.  Click here for Presentation (97kb)

Session 5 – Analysing Trends and Servicing Demands – Phil Gray and Wain Walker

Phil Gray - owner of CASA Leisure and Director of SGL Consulting Group looked at the current challenges, trends and issues in today’s environment influencing Recreation and Leisure Centres and highlighted possible strategies to cope with these trends as well as addressing possible areas of future focus. Wain Walker – Manager of the Parks Sports and Fitness Centre, Wain gave a detailed insight into the diversity and major changes taking place within the Centres surrounding community. Wain looked at the innovative ways the Centre is dealing with these changes, how they promote the centre to the large number of new community members and how they identify the communities’ needs.  Click here for Presentation (2,904kb) and Click here for Notes (40kb)

Session 6 – Analysing your operational and customer service standards – Gary Crilley

Gary Crilley is a Senior Sport and Recreation Lecturer at Uni SA and Co-Director of CERM PI who have conducted research into operational management and client service standards within Recreation and Leisure Centres throughout Australia and New Zealand since 1992 providing valuable benchmarking statistics in these areas. Over 165 centres participated in this research in 2006 and Gary looked at some of the findings from this research, the gap between expectation and performance, the value of these findings to facility managers and the benefits of being involved.

Session 7 – National Exercise Recreation and Sport Survey (ERASS) Findings – Michelle Crisp

Michelle Crisp, Office for Recreation and Sport Research Officer provided an overview of the findings from the 2003 ERASS data which contained an increased sample size from South Australia allowing extensive research to be done into South Australian participation rates in regards to metropolitan and regional areas of SA, organised versus unorganised physical activity, male versus female participation rates and sports specific rates throughout each region.  Click here for Presentation (2,216kb)
