The introduction of Codes of Practice
within recreation and sport
In recent years more emphasis has been placed on industry
standards. This has been driven in part by risk management,
but also by contractual and affiliation requirements imposed
on the industry by outside bodies.
- Contractual arrangements - where organisations
affiliate with National bodies they are often involved in
contractual issues relating to the delivery of their sport
or activity. For example to have a ‘world or national
record’ recognised in an event certain conditions
may be laid down by the sports governing body.
- Vocational Education and Training (VET) -
the delivery of training for people working in the sport
and recreation sector is becoming more linked to the VET
system and some areas are tied to national registration
systems for employment (eg National Fitness Leaders Registration
scheme).
- The Outdoor Recreation sector is close to
adopting a national registration scheme as well.
The push towards national codes of practices
is likely to have an impact. The Outdoor Recreation sector
is at the forefront, with the Victorian Government already
funding the development of Adventure Activity Standards.
There is a strong push to have these standards
form the basis for a national set of standards and codes.
To date standards have been developed for:
- Artificial Climbing Structures
- Mountain Biking
- Recreational Angling
- Recreational Caving
- River Rafting
- Rock Climbing
- Four Wheel Driving

Standards contact Recreation

The Fitness Industry though Fitness Australia and Fitness
NSW have developed a standard which has formed the basis for
the development of State codes for the operation of fitness
centres.
More information on the South Australian Fitness
Industry Code is available from Recreation

The Department of Education and Children’s
Services has in place a series of guidelines for the conduct
of school camps and excursions.
