- Overview
Recreation and Sport is considered an industry
by many people, it has a marked impact, both financial and
social, on communities across the state.
What does the Recreation and Sport Industry
consist of?
In the past few years the industry has been categorised into
four distinct sectors:
- Sport: the area most people
are familiar with includes most community sport.
- Community Recreation: the
most un-recognised sector but includes many indoor and community
recreation facilities, aquatics, programs for people with
a disability and older adults.
- Outdoor Recreation: includes
many of the ‘high risk’ activities, and also
activities like climbing, bushwalking and horse riding.
There are also strong links to both the tourism industry
and schools involved in Outdoor Education programs.
- Fitness: gyms and activities
like aerobics are allocated here and are characterised by
a high level of private ownership relative to the other
sectors.
Some activities cross over. For example horse
riding has both its sport disciplines (showjumping, eventing),
as well as outdoor disciplines such as trail riding.
Who does the Office for Recreation and
Sport (ORS) work with?
From time to time ORS will become involved in all areas, however
as a rule ORS works with sport and active recreation groups.
Currently 15 sports are linked to the South
Australian Sports Institute (SASI) to create pathways
for elite athletes. There are also three national elite programs
operating in SA - cycling, beach volleyball and swimming.
ORS funds approximately 143 recreation and sport
organisations through its main funding program. This is intended
to support State level organisations. Close working relationships
are maintained with approximately 70 of these groups.
Close relationships are maintained for a variety
of reasons including:
We also work closely with the Australian Sports
Commission and there are several national liaison groupings
which bring the various state Offices for Recreation and Sport
together.
