Teachers and Schools FAQ
How does our school join the Active Australia
Schools Network (AASN)?
Visit the AASN section on this website to get details on how
to join Active Australia Schools
Network.
Are other schools in my district members
of the Active Australia Schools Network?
With over 300 SA members there are probably quite a few schools
in your district – both government and non-government,
who are members.
If you are already a member you can check out
member schools on the Australian
Sports Commission website.
Alternatively call ACHPER National on +61 8
8340 3388 or the SA State Coordinator on +61 8 8416 6713 to
find nearby members.
What is ‘Active for Life’? Is
it the same as the ‘be active – Lets Go’
initiative?
For information on all aspects of these Department of Education
and Children’s Services (DECS) initiatives please call
Rick Baldock on (08) 8226 4386. Details can also be found
on the DECS website www.schools.sa.gov.au/schlstaff/
Can my school apply for grants to build
sport and recreation facilities?
Yes. The Community Recreation and Sport Facilities Program
has been established to allocate funds to eligible community-based
organisations, Local Government, Schools and State sporting
and active recreation associations which develop facilities
for a wide range of recreation and sport activities. Details
of the grants can be found in the Grants
and Scholarships section of this website.
What health and physical education (HPE
or PD) training programs does the Office for Recreation and
Sport (ORS) run for teachers? What about sports coaching courses?
Most HPE/PD specific training is conducted by ACHPER
(SA) and DECS. The ORS focuses on training in sport
and recreation courses. Courses of interest to teachers include
the Orientation to Coaching course and the various courses
conducted by the Coach
and Volunteer Education Centre.
Sports Medicine Australia (SA) also conduct
training course that are very useful for teachers in charge
of sports teams or those wanting to update their skills in
sports injuries and management. Details available at their
website.
Do you have any posters, water bottles or
freebies that we can give to our students?
Currently we have a number of ‘Thanks Coach, Thanks
Official’ posters, bookmarks and booklets available
but there is very little else we can offer schools. Flyers
of ‘Codes of Behaviour’ for players, officials,
coaches etc are also available. Call +61 8 7424 7713 if you
wish to order quantities of the above. A large range of 'be active' merchandise is available for purchase at www.beactive.com.au/merchandise.htm
What is the Active After-school Communities
program?
The Australian government’s ‘Active After-school
Communities' is an after-school-hours structured health and
physical activity program to be conducted in primary schools
and approved After School Hours Care Services.
The 3.00pm – 5.30pm timeslot provides
a real opportunity to offer a structured physical activity
program to primary school aged children using local sporting
clubs, volunteers, private providers, teachers and out of
school hours care workers.
‘Active After-school Communities’
co-ordinators work at national, state and regional levels
to implement the program.
