Big week in SASI Sailing this week with the christening of two new purchases

James Paterson received his new Olympic Finn class dingy this week. His mother Anne christened James Paterson’s new Finn ‘Wombat’.  Wombat was christened at the SASI sailing training venue at West Beach.  This is a major investment in James future in the class.  The National Finn fleet is building in strength and the older boats are just not able to cut it at the front of the fleet anymore.  At the price of a medium size car we hope it takes him to the top of the pack.

The SASI Sailing Program coach boat received a new heart last week, in the form of a replacement 60hp Yamaha engine.  The last engine lasted 3156 hours of operation.  These engines are designed to last 2000 hours of operation and we hope the new one will serve us well.  Program coach Brendan Todd had the following comment. “ Confidence was not high going on the sea with the old engine any more.  If the engine breaks down its a real show stopper!  In our extreme sailing environment it is imperative that we have a reliable coach boat for training and safety.” Program athlete Sarah Paterson christened the new engine last week.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Program

The SASI Sailing Program will provide world-class coaching, training, facilities, support services and access to domestic competition to improve athlete development with a view to:

• Preparing athletes for best performance at Olympic and Paralympic World Championships and Olympic and Paralympic Games

Key target Areas:

Athlete

Target Group:

• Identified senior athletes in Olympic and Paralympic classes who may be eligible for National Squad selection.
• Identified Elite Development athlete - including ISAF World Youth Championship athletes.

Key outcomes: Increase the level of participation and results of South Australian sailors in Olympic classes in Australia and overseas.

Strategy: At SASI we will provide high level of on water training and regatta support for SASI athletes. We will build and educate our developing sailors in areas of nutrition, strength and conditioning to a level that they have the ability to achieve their goals.

Coaching

Target group: Club and private coaches working with sailors in South Australia.

Key outcome: to increase knowledge and support within the South Australian coaching group.

Strategy: To provide regular coaching forums and mentoring of SA coaches.

NATIONAL TRAINING CENTRE PROGRAM

The SASI Sailing Program is a partnership program funded and supported by the South Australian government through SASI in partnership with both National and State Sporting Organisation. A key partner in the program is Yachting Australia who contributes funding support to the program as part of its National High Performance Plan. The NTC endorsement of the program recognises the status of the program in the sports National High Performance Pathway and also the indirect funding contribution to the SASI program by the Australian Sports Commission through Yachting Australia.
