Under 23 World Championships

The Under 23 World Championships were held in Brandenburg, Germany last week from July 17th to 20th.  Five SASI rowers were competing across four crews in the strong U23 Australian team.

First time Australian team member and SASI rower, Laura Osti took out BRONZE in the women’s quad scull, after her boat was an early leader in the race.

Bryn Coudraye and Ned Kinnear represented Australia in the coxless men’s four for their second consecutive year.  Along with West Australian crew compatriots, they managed a strong showing, finishing 4th overall.  They recovered from a slow start, gradually working their way through the field to miss out on a medal by a heart-breaking 0.4 of a second.

Matt Bolt, moving back to sculling this year after representing Australia in a sweep boat last year, performed strongly in the men’s quad scull, coming away with a 5th place from the regatta.

Maja Fiddler (SASI) & Jacky Peile (NSW), both in their first Australian team, trained here in Adelaide under the able tutelage of experienced SASI coach Zoltan Shepherd.  They acquitted themselves well in a strong field and finished 2nd in the B final by the barest of margins - ending with an ultimate world ranking of 8th.

Olympic Preparations

Reigning World Champion SASI athletes Amber Halliday and Marguerite Houston continue to train towards Beijing in the warmer climes of Kawana Waters, Queensland.  Fellow SASI athletes, Sally Causby (former World Champion with Amber in the double scull) and Anna McRae (former U23 World Champ medalist) were invited by SASI Head Coach Adrian David to take a break from chilly Adelaide and train with the Olympic double in Qld.  This has also broken the monotony of the Olympic doubles training for Amber and Marguerite, giving them some variety in their relentlessly intense training and the opportunity to train in a bigger boat (the quad).

Fellow SASI Olympic team members James McRae and Chris Morgan have also headed north from their wintery training base of Franklin, Tasmania to the more Beijing-appropriate climate of Qld and continue to train and prepare well in their Olympic quad scull crew.
