New W League Women

Finally it looks like a new improved version of the previous Women' National League has been announced. Aimed at providing top quality competition for the best players in Australia it will very soon be recognised as one of the best in the World.

The 8 team league is scheduled to start at the end of October which will be led by the Men's A' league clubs plus a franchise set up in Canberra.

SASI Coach Kevin McCormack was thrilled by the announcement. "This new League will provide further opportunitiies for young girls to fulfill their goals of playing at the highest level of Football in Australia. I am particularly pleased for the top players in South Australia who despite great local partnerships and dedication have been forgotten about in regards to competition at this level.Their time has finally come again and competition for places will be fierce."

AIS Scholasrhsips announced

Victoria Balomenos and Emma Wirkus have recently been offered AIS Scholasrships which will bolster their opportunitites in the future to represent Australia at the next Women's World Cup. Balomenos recently returned from a trip with the Matildas to China bouyed by her recent International performances and experience gained against a team preparing for their home Olympics. Balomenos has also been selected in a promising Matildas squad which will work on fast tracking a group of young players for early International representation.

Wirkus will be thrilled to have maintained her status as an AIS Goalkeeper after wretched luck has forced her onto the surgeons operating table 3 times in the last 6 months. Firstly the 2 hip injuries requiring surgery, sustained during arduous World Cup preparations and the recent knee injury sustainied in the FFSA Boys league would have knocked the confidence and desire to compete out of of most athletes. However we all know that Emma will be back better with equal desire to succeed sooner rather than later.

SASI 3 Warm up Chilly Canberra

SASI Women's Football Players under Coach Kevin McCormack have recently returned from the National Young Matilda Camp in Canberra's cold and chilly AIS.
Sian McLaren, Angela Fimmano and Rachel Quigley impressed National Youth Coaches Alen Stajcic and Kevin McCormack in the final camp prior to forthcoming International friendly games against Japan (August) and China (September).

SASI Head Coach McCormack was thrilled with the performances of his 3 charges in their bid to represent Australia at the next World Youth Cup.
"Maca, Ang' have grown in confidence and were more than competive in their respective postions against strong opposition from a strong Queensland and NSW contingent of players. As it was Quig's first camp she did not have the advantage of the experience of previous camps but was able to show enough to be in with a good chance of being involved in future opportunities. Maca was outstanding with her safe hands and distribution, Ang' dominated the midfield scoring a cracker and hitting several other long range efforts while Quigs held the ball up well and brought other forwards into the game constantly."

All 3 players have been provided with feedback as to how they can improve their selection potential and return to a even more intense training enviroment at SASI.

On the Junior Matildas front Ruth Wallace and Nicole Calder leave for Canberra on Thursday to prepare for games v Japan next month.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The SASI Women's Soccer program is a national training centre (NTC) program that caters for the elite female soccer players in South Australia. The major focus of the program is to identify and develop players for inclusion in the Australian senior and junior teams. The program also identifies and develops junior players with the long term potential to participate in national teams.

The squad competes as a team in the National Women's Soccer League against other state institute or academy teams. This team is managed in partnership with the SA Women's Soccer Association and is coached by the SASI program coach.

The NTC programs are under the direction of the national coach through the institute programs. The NTC programs will identify and train the best available talent, regardless of age, who show a commitment to achieving excellence at the highest elite level in the sport.

NATIONAL TRAINING CENTER PROGRAM

The SASI Women's Football Program is a partnership program funded and supported by the South Australian government through SASI in partnership with both National and State Sporting Organisation. A key partner in the program is Federation of Football Australia who contributes funding support to the program as part of its National High Performance Plan. The NTC endorsement of the program recognises the status of the program in the sports National High Performance Pathway and also the indirect funding contribution to the SASI program by the Australian Sports Commission through Federation of Football Australia.
