Scholarships - Country Athlete Award Scheme

Applications are now open for the 2008 Awards

What is the CAAS?
The Country Athlete Award Scheme is an initiative of the South Australian Government. The scheme aims to assist junior athletes from rural areas to achieve their sporting potential.

The financial assistance provided is to enable the athlete to access training and competition programs.

What are the benefits of the CAAS?

  • Up to $800 to assist with travel costs to training and competition
  • A certificate and t-shirt recognising the athlete as a Country Athlete Award Scheme recipient
  • An invitation to attend a SASI Talent Development Program

What are the application criteria?

  • Applicants must be aged 14 - 18 years on closing date
  • Applicants must permanently reside 130km or more from the Adelaide GPO (applicants who board in Adelaide are ineligible)
  • Kangaroo Island residents are eligible to apply
  • Applicants must be a permanent resident of South Australia
  • Applicants are ineligible if they receive support of $1000 or more in the current financial year, including: SASI High Performance or Talent Scholarships, State Sporting Association Scholarships
  • Athletes must have a long-term commitment to their sport and demonstrate ability to eventually compete at the elite level
  • Applicants must be involved in a SA State Sporting Association (SSA) whose development program operates within the National Junior Sport Policy guidelines
  • The athletes State Sporting Associations' sponsorship arrangements must not conflict with the philosophies of SA Government's health promotion messages (eg. no tobacco sponsorship)
  • Applicants must be current participants in: either state or state country development squads and/or state, national or international competitions and/or be recommended by an accredited State Coach or Officer of the SSA
  • Note: the application process can take some time. Applicants should understand that lodging an application does not guarantee them funding. Additionally, there is no guarantee that funding will be provided prior to travel, so applicants should be prepared to use their own resources to travel to events.

How do you apply for a CAAS?
To apply for the Country Athlete Award Scheme, you must:

  • Complete all the details on the Country Athlete Award Scheme Application Form
  • Attach a one page letter of endorsement from your your club/association/coach or relevant school teacher demonstrating your support for and commitment to your application
  • Forward the scholarship application to SASI before the closing date (11 April 2008)

Applications are welcome either directly from individuals or via schools, local clubs or SSAs.

How are applications assessed?
Once received, SASI forwards all applications to the appropriate State Sporting Association for endorsement and a ranking. The selection panel base their decision on this ranking, and on a comparison with the applicants involved in other sports.
