Specific Population Groups - Mature Age

The Office for Recreation and Sport is involved in and supports a number of projects aimed at increasing participation of people over the age of 50 in physical activity, recreation and sport.

Mature Age Physical Activity Network

The Mature Age Physical Activity Network (MAPAN) was established to address a key recommendation of the Mature Age be active forum conducted in December 2003. The Network consists of individuals that have an interest in mature age physical activity. The Network is email-based, with a regular electronic newsletter providing a means of sharing information regarding ongoing developments, related news and opportunities for collaborative partnerships, funding and professional development.  Click here to view past editions of the Newsletter.

2007 MAPAN Summit and Forum

As part of SA’s Active Ageing Week, the Office for Recreation and Sport hosted the 2007 MAPAN Summit and Forum on 9 October 2007 at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre.

The Summit involved over 33 representatives from 24 invited stakeholder groups, who came together with the aim of reaching a consensus on the strategic priorities for MAPAN and the sector over the next three years.  Consensus was not achieved on the day, however the key outcome was the formation of a MAPAN Strategic Working Party, to progress the development of strategic priorities.  The Working Party is comprised of representatives from Active Ageing SA, Council on the Ageing (SA), Centre for Physical Activity in Ageing, Arthritis/Osteoporosis SA, Department of Health, Office for Recreation and Sport, SA Divisions of General Practice, The National Heart Foundation (SA Division) and the Multicultural Communities Council of SA.

The MAPAN Forum was the second biennial Forum for the Network.  The Forum attendees received presentations regarding best practice through COTA’s Strength for Life program, snapshots of what is occurring in the health and fitness sectors, review of MAPAN and significant achievements in the sector over the past two years and an overview of the South Australian Physical Activity Strategy and how it relates to their work.  Additionally attendees participated in a workshop aimed at establishing a professional development agenda for MAPAN.

Mature Age Physical Activity Posters

Produced by the Office for Recreation and Sport, these two posters are aimed at promoting physical activity to people over the age of 50.  One poster focuses on physical activity in a general sense and the other poster promotes dance.  The A-2 posters have a ‘blank area’ that organisations can use to promote their own programs.  Click on the links below to view a PDF version of the posters and contact ORS to obtain hard copies free of charge.
