Rio Tinto Indigenous Lands Challenge Cup

In early 2002, two staff members from the Office for Recreation and Sport, Mr Jack Johncock and Mr Eugene Warrior, met with Mr Denis Coleson, community member and approached the SANFL through Mr Don Mc Sweeney, Regional Director, Eyre Peninsular Zone. The idea, was to conduct an AFL curtain raiser football match between two Aboriginal football teams at AAMI Stadium. The teams would consist of representatives from the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands and the Maralinga Tjarutja (MT) Lands.  This core group of people managed to pull together their resources and gain sponsorship to conduct the event for the first time in 2005.

The inaugural Rio Tinto Indigenous Lands Challenge Cup was held in 2005 before the AFL game between Port Power and Essendon, June 17, 2006 before Port Power and West Coast, and 27 May 2007 before Port Power and Geelong, during Round 19, the Dreamtime Round.
